We talk a lot about self-care these days — baths, boundaries, and balance — but not nearly enough about self-rescue. And yet, that’s what most of us really need. Self-care is what we do to feel good, but self-rescue is what we do to stay alive.
The Turning Point
For years, I thought taking care of myself meant slowing down, treating myself gently, and finding rest. I was proud of that softness. After years of working too much and giving too much, it felt like a rebellion. But somewhere in all that softness, I realized I’d grown fragile.
A little too reliant on comfort.
A little too easily exhausted.
A little too dependent on feeling okay to do what needed to be done.
The truth hit me quietly one morning at the gym — the same gym I once dreaded. A year earlier, I’d started weight training to heal my body after decades of sitting at a desk, writing books, scripts, and essays that kept my mind sharp but left my body weak. My hips had tilted forward, my spine curved with fatigue, and everything hurt.
